What is Hispanic Heritage Month and Why is it Celebrated?
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from September 15 to October 15. This month-long celebration honors the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Hispanic Heritage Month first began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. It was later expanded as a month-long celebration in 1988.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize the many contributions that Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to the United States. We honor those who created and inspired the special dishes we enjoy, the music we love and the art we admire. A tribute to our ancestors, who brought their culture far away from home, but continued to celebrate it.
Food is a central pillar of the Hispanic culture. Using simple ingredients, generations have been able to create delicious recipes for a wide range of people and uses. Generational recipes passed down, bring families, neighbors and strangers together in times of need and celebration. Today, these recipes have endless variations as they have evolved between generations and different regions. These recipes are what inspire our chefs at Uncle Julio’s and what we want to celebrate this month.
