The History of Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The battle was significant because it was the first major military victory for a poorly equipped Mexican Army against a well-trained European force. This battle was part of a much larger struggle, the Franco-Mexican War (1861 – 1867), where Mexico fought for independence from French rule.

Although Cinco de Mayo has become an important cultural holiday in both Mexico and America, it is not to be confused with the day Mexicans finally gained independence, which falls on September 16.
